Silicon Carbide (SiC) A fusion of sand and coke. Used in kiln shelves and other parts. Highly refractory material used to create bubbles; though in highly alkaline glazes 1% can create a copper red style colour.  Fine grades can be used in small quantities to produce local reduction effects in oxidation-fired glazes; larger amounts or larger grain sizes can be used to form cratered surfaces.
